If you're new to chiropractic care, you may hear some words and terms that you are unfamiliar with. Here are some of the common terms used in chiropractic care.

acute - short duration and relatively severe

cervical - vertebrae of the neck, usually seven bones

disc - cartilage (cushion or pad) that separates spinal vertebrae, absorbs shocks to the spine and protects the nerve system

facet - actual joint surface of a spinal bone

fixation - being held in a fixed position

intervertebral foramina - lateral opening through which spinal nerve roots exit the spinal column

lumbar - vertebrae of the lower back, usually five bones

palpation - examining the spine with your fingers

range of motion - range, measured in degrees of a circle, through which a joint can be moved
